Hopkinsville Community College
College Quest
| Project Director: | Carol Kirves, (270) 886-3921, x6204 |
| Enrollment: | 30 students, grades 6-11 (31 GEAR UP Kentucky students) |
| Need: |
In Christian County and across Kentucky, there is a documented need to improve the academic skills of students, educate students and parents about college goals, and increase parental involvement in GEAR UP activities. College Quest will address these priorities of Rigor, Awareness and Engagement while providing students with a meaningful and memorable educational experience on a college campus. |
| Project Activities: |
During this week-long summer academy, students will participate in three kinds of activities:
- Enrichment workshops featuring engaging topics presented with an academic focus to boost proficiency in math, science and writing. Topics include scientific methods utilized by detectives, mathematical theories used by architects, identification and conservation processes used by environmental educators, and creative writing techniques familiar to poets, songwriters, and authors. Incorporating academics with contemporary subjects will encourage students to be more attentive and more likely to retain what they learn.
- College awareness sessions including career inventory activities, a campus tour, financial aid programs, and specific contact information for local students as well as their parents. These experiences will reinforce the idea that a college education is not only possible but is an exciting opportunity.
- Personal development workshops such as communication and teambuilding exercises as well as activities to increase creativity. Students with good interpersonal skills and an open mind toward learning are more likely to be successful in high school, college and in their careers.

| Assessment Plan: |
Student needs were drawn from the GEAR UP priorities of Rigor, Awareness and Engagement. Proficiency will be measured with a pre-test and post-test in each of the four enrichment workshops. The project coordinator will share these results with local counselors to determine whether significant gains were made by students. Counselors track student progress in school. |
| Staffing/
Management Plan: |
The summer academy will be directed by the college's continuing education coordinator with administrative assistance from the CE staff support associate and one student worker. Workshops will be led by four local educators, three college professional staff members, and a KHEAA representative.
