Promising Practices

Broadway Middle School and Providence High School

Summer Reading Camp

Campus Based: Madisonville Community College, 2000 College Drive, Madisonville 42431
Contact Person: Anna Leasure, MCC Educational Talent Search, 270-824-8680
Number of Students: 21 rising 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th graders
Need: CATS score reports for these two schools have consistently shown that many of their students need remediation in all core subject areas. The focus of this two-week enrichment camp is to provide additional reading, math, and science enrichment for Broadway MS and Providence HS students through hands-on activities via computers, math manipulatives, interesting reading materials, engaging science projects, and a field trip to Frankfort or Mammoth Cave (to be decided at a later date). Additionally, parental involvement within the schools needs a boost, so inviting parents to spend a day at the camp will hopefully motivate more involvement in their child's education.
Project Activities: The curriculum theme will be Exploring Kentucky, Past and Present. Classes will integrate skills in reading, math and science. Activities include the following:
  • Parents' Day
    • The President of MCC will speak with the students and parents
    • Financial aid and admissions counselors will speak with parents
  • Field trip to Frankfort capitol, museum, or to Mammoth Cave
  • Hands-on activities
  • Enrichment at the MCC Health Campus

The project was designed with the following research findings in mind:

  • A minimum of two weeks is needed to effect change in student learning
  • Students are engaged through hands-on activities
  • Positive feedback and a relaxed atmosphere increases student achievement
  • Being on a college campus increases college awareness
  • Parental involvement improves student learning
Assessment Plan: Targeted students are selected based on teacher recommendations, students' grades, class work, and CATS, GRADE, EXPLORE, and PLAN assessment results. The STAR reading assessment is given to determine students' reading levels and to complete the selection process. Students are selected to participate if they read one or two levels below grade. Letters of invitation are sent to those parents. On the last day, students again take the STAR reading assessment to determine reading growth as a result of their camp participation. Follow-up will consist of tracking participants' grades the following school year, and for those who are struggling, ESS after-school tutoring will be required.
Staffing/ Management: 1 Camp coordinator
1 MCC GEAR UP KY site facilitator (assistant coordinator)
1 Reading Specialist
3 new Murray State University education graduates who were in the MCC/MSU program.
Total Costs: $ 12,250.00. This amount does not include match.
