Promising PracticesLewis County Middle SchoolTimed ReadingTimed reading is a program that helps students improve their reading comprehension. It also helps students increase the speed at which they read a selection. Each student has a timed reading book, notebook, graph paper, and a pencil. All materials are kept together in the classroom in which they do Timed Readings. Students are taught procedures such as scanning, looking at the title, the first and last paragraph, and other strategies. When they do an actual Timed Reading they are told when to start and when they are finished they are told to raise their hand and the elapsed time is given. Students chart their progress in notebooks. Students are put into levels based upon their S.T.A.R. test reports. Each teacher is required to complete 1 hour of training. Included in this training are the following: Pre-reading skills, methods for grading students responses, and methods for graphing individual reading time performance. Several students showed significant improvement in their S.T.A.R. reading assessments. This program was not in place for the entire school year but students who were assessed showed improvement. This year we will have full year implementation of the program. The total cost for this program with professional development included is around $6,000.00 Standards and Indicators for Success:
